Veronica Campbell-Brown, 16 time World and Olympic medallist, tested positive for banned substance hydrochlorothiazide back on May 4th and is still awaiting an IAAF Doping Review Board decision on whether she will be banned from the sport.
The Jamaican Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) Disciplinary Panel has recommended, after almost a week long hearing, that Veronica Campbell-Brown be issued a public warning for committing doping violation, but not serve a ban.
The JAAA Disciplinary Panel included former Chief Justice Lensley Wolfe, President of the Medical Association of Jamaica Dr Aggrey Irons and attorney Lincoln Eatmon. They are in favour that Campbell- Brown be cleared for competition.
The JAAA statement read: “The disciplinary committee has issued a ruling that Veronica Campbell-Brown has committed an anti doping violation contrary to IAAF Rule 32.2a. They have recommended that a reprimand without any period of ineligibility would be appropriate. All relevant parties involved have been duly informed.”
Anti-doping ruling states that the IAAF Doping Review Board must confirm or appeal the JAAA recommendation within 45 days. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) then has the option of appealing the IAAF decision within 21 days.
However, 45 days has now passed and the IAAF has still not made a decision. An IAAF source quoted in the The Jamaican Gleaner has stated that the case is ongoing and added that the deadlines do not apply to this investigation. 31 year old Campbell-Brown says the banned substance was used to treat a leg injury and vows to clear her name.
