Usain Bolt will be forced to hand back one of his nine Olympic Gold medals after relay team mate Nesta Carter tested positive for a banned substance.
Bolt, along with Carter, Asafa Powell and Michael Frater raced to relay gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in a then world record time of 37.10s
However Carter, 31, was found to have taken the banned substance methylhexaneamine, after retesting of blood and urine samples from nine years ago.
It sees Bolt lose his prestigious ‘triple-triple’ of Olympic titles (100m, 200m & 4x100m), but last year insisted he would have no qualms handing back the medal in the wake of Carter’s positive test:
“It’s heartbreaking [the positive test] because over the years you’ve worked hard to accumulate gold medals and work hard to be a champion … but it’s just one of those things.
“Things happen in life, so when it’s confirmed or whatever, if I need to give back my gold medal I’d have to give it back, it’s not a problem for me.”
Second place Trinidad & Tobago now take gold, with Japan’s bronze upgraded to silver and Brazil now on the podium as bronze medallists.
