On the 14th July news broke that Tyson Gay had tested positive for a banned substance and had voluntarily withdrawn from the IAAF World Championships.

The details for what he had reportedly tested positive for had not been reported since the new broke until today.

The BBC reported it obtained “extracts of a letter sent to Gay ” by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency which went on to state that the positive test came from Carbon Isotope Ratio Analysis (also known as IRMS) is normally used to detect the banned steroid testosterone or closely related substances such as DHEA or androstenedione that are known precursors of testosterone.

The letter states that  “the sample had an adverse analytical finding reflecting values that are consistent with the administration of a steroid of exogenous [external] nature “. It then goes on to state that the positive test was for an “anabolic agent ” which, if proven, would be subject to the maximum punishment currently available – a two year ban from competition.

It has been widely reported that Gay failed has failed three drugs tests, two in competition tests including one at the US Track & Field Championships in addition to the failed out-of-competition test he admitted in a teary telephone interview with the Associated Press. In July Gay told the Associated Press  “I don ‘t have a sabotage story, I basically put my trust in someone and was let down. I know exactly what went on, but I can ‘t discuss it right now. “

It has been reported that Gay has recently been working with Atlanta based chiropractor and anti-ageing doctor Clayton Gibson. Such specialists are known to use hormones such as testosterone and DHEA in their treatments although it remains unclear if Gibson, who insists his clinic only uses “food-based” products with its athletes, is the backroom staff member referred to above by the 30-year-old former world champion.

In June this year Gay ran 9.75 seconds to equal the tenth fastest 100m in history. He has also clocked the then fastest 200m of 2013 with a time of 19.74 and would have been many fan ‘s favorutie for the gold in both events at the IAAF World Championships.

The joint second fastest man in history behind Usain Bolt is not the only high profile athlete to have tested positive in 2013. Former 100m world record holder Asafa Powell, Jamican 100m/200m sensation Veronica Campbell-Brown and former world 100m bronze medalist Kelly-Ann Baptiste have all also tested positive. The latter was also under the guidance of coach Lance Brauman after joining Gay ‘s Florida based training group in 2010.
