World junior champion Niamh Emerson says her 2019 season is over after undergoing surgery following a knee injury.
The 20-year-old heptathlete, a runner-up at this year’s European Indoor Championships in Glasgow, wrote on Instagram that she had partially torn her patella tendon.
The tissue connects the kneecap with the shinbone and problems with it caused her to retire part way through last month’s Götzis multi-event meeting in Austria.
Posting pictures of her treatment on Instagram, the Commonwealth bronze medallist said: “Some things just don’t work out because something greater is waiting…see you on the track in 2020.”
It has already been a season worth celebrating for the young Derbyshire athlete. She managed the fourth highest pentathlon score ever by a British woman en-route to silver in Glasgow.
