Students preparing for BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships

A host of Great Britain internationals and Commonwealth Games stars are expected to feature at this weekend’s British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Outdoor Athletics Championships.

The three-day event which starts on Saturday 5 May and continues through until Bank Holiday Monday will be streamed live on this page of runjumpthrow.com. If you live in North America, you can watch the action on runnerspace.com.

Those on the entry lists include Laviai Nielsen (below, far right), who was part of the 4x400m quartet that won silver at last year’s IAAF World Championships in London, and reigning BUCS 100m champion Reuben Arthur, who won the 4x100m relay on the Gold Coast.

Commonwealth bronze medallist Niamh Emerson, who shone in the heptathlon for Team England, will be in the colours of Loughborough this weekend and has been entered for several disciplines including the high jump, sprint hurdles and long jump.

Her university colleague Jessica Judd won her first gold medal as a student back in 2012. Last year’s world semi-finalist will be aiming to leave the competition with eight BUCS titles, having been selected to defend the 800m and 5000m she won last year. In a similar vein, shot putter and Cardiff Metropolitan student Adele Nicoll has a chance to win her seventh medal as a student.

Others included who represented their countries in Australia are Guernsey national record holder Cameron Chalmers, who will be going for a hat-trick of individual outdoor titles over 400m.

Meanwhile, Finette Agyapong, who just missed out on a medal with Team England in the 4x400m relay, is the clear favourite in the women’s 200m.

The event is often a springboard for success, and this could be the case with European Championships to come in Berlin this August.

Three-time BUCS champion Jamie Webb competed in the last edition of the Europeans in Amsterdam in 2016. He will be hoping that a strong start to the outdoor season can put him in contention for international selection over 800m.
