Seven athletes fail drug tests at Moscow 2013

The world governing body for international athletics as confirmed that seven athletes failed doping tests at the recent IAAF World Championships in Moscow, adding further positive tests to a season that rife with high profile drug sanctions.

A total of 1919 blood samples were taken by the authorities in Moscow, collected from four different hotels and were analysed daily by a WADA-accredited laboratory in Moscow, with further analyses of samples at a laboratory in Lausanne taking place.

538 athletes were urine tested during the competition with a further 132 urine tests taking place during the pre-competition period. The urine tests have shown that seven athletes, including one finalist, tested positive for doping violations.

The IAAF has reported that the below athletes have either already been sanctioned or provisionally suspended:

AVRAMENKO, Roman (UKR): dehydrochloromethyltestosterone
5th, final, men’s Javelin Throw

AZIZI, Massoud (AFG): nandrolone metabolites
8th, 4th heat, preliminary round, men’s 100m

BRYZGINA, Elyzaveta (UKR): drostanolone
5th, 1st heat semi-final, women’s 200m

KOZHAKHMETOVA, Ayman (KAZ): exogenous testosterone + EPO
27th, women’s 20km Race Walk

RAHIMIAN, Ebrahim (IRI): EPO
52nd, men’s 20km Race Walk

RYABOVA, Yelena (TKM): dehydrochloromethyltestosterone
6th, 3rd heat, women’s 200m

SALOJ, Jeremias (GUA): EPO
33rd, men’s Marathon

Earlier this year former world champion Tyson Gay and former world record holder Asafa Powell both tested positive for banned substances, as did the London 2012 200m Olympic gold medallist Veronica Campbell-Brown and 2011 world bronze 100m medallist Kelly-Ann Baptiste.

The president of the IAAF, Lamine Diack, said: “The specialised analyses and the blood samples taken in connection with the Athlete Biological Passport emphasise the IAAF ‘s firm commitment and resolve to use the most sophisticated methods at our disposal in the fight against cheating in sport. “
