Edinburgh youngster Josh Kerr recently broke the Scottish U17 National Record for 1500m – eclipsing a mark set by Lachie Stewart’s son Glen some 27 years ago.

Kerr clocked 3.52.46 to win the England Athletics U17 title at 1500m and added the 3000m title the following day at Bedford.

And Edinburgh AC athlete Josh is now among 10 promising teenagers who have been admitted to the scottishathletics Youth Academy after reaching certain UK-wide standards. He is joined by club-mate, Cameron Tindle, a young sprinter from the Borders, while Central AC are to be represented by Lewis McGuire (high jump), Caitlin Edgar (long jump, multi-events) and Tom Chandler (multi-events).

Giffnock North have two athletes in the 2014 intake – steeplechaser Christopher Stewart and long jumper Rachel Alexander. The other entrants are: Alisha Rees (sprinter, Banchory Stonehaven), Jill Cherry (sprinter, Victoria Park-Glasgow), Pamela McNicol (hurdler, Law and District AC).

The governing body started the Youth Academy a year ago with the aim being to nurture Scotland’s best 16 and 17-year-olds and guide and support the athletes, their coach and their parents.
