Scotland compete as a team in the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International for only the second time in the long history of the fixture at the Emirates Arena on Saturday 24 January.
It is a huge opportunity for Scottish athletes to gain experience at international level in a match which will see them compete against GB and NI, France and Germany.
And nine Glasgow 2014 athletes have been named – so far – in the Scotland selection for January 24 – including 800m specialist Guy Learmonth, who raced David Rudisha three times at Hampden on successive nights last July.
There’s also a younger element to the team, too, with scottishathletics very much of the view that January 24 provides an ideal chance for athletes, and their coaches, to earn their first taste of action at this kind of level with thoughts already turning to Gold Coast 2018.
Learmonth, Jamie Bowie, Kirsten McAslan, Sarah Warnock, Ray Bobrownicki, Diane Ramsay, Greg Louden, Grant Plenderleith and Zoey Clark are those with Glasgow 2014 experience named so far.
Rodger Harkins, scottishathletics Director of Coaching, said: ‘Firstly, let me congratulate all the athletes, and their families and coaches, on Scotland selection for the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International. It should always be an honour to wear the Scotland vest.
‘There are one or two who missed out on the Commonwealth Games who will see what it took last summer to qualify and will be starting to think about Gold Coast 2018.
‘It is chance for them, and indeed all the athletes, to push themselves forward. I am hoping that we will see some good signs of individual development.
‘For the athletics public in Scotland, I think it is a good opportunity to see people they know from our clubs and from National events competing in an International context. That should be exciting as we take on three strong countries in GB, France and Germany.’
Selected athletes for a couple of other events will be named in due course, while the National Open at the Emirates on January 17 is liable to dictate picks in Men’s 60m and the Men’s long jump.
