The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has revoked the accreditation of the Rio de Janeiro laboratory that was due to handle the testing for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games after it failed to comply with the International Standard for Laboratories and the related Technical Documents.
The revocation will come into effect from 25 September 2013 and will prevent the laboratory from being authorised to carry out testing of doping control samples on behalf of WADA or any other testing authority. The laboratory is currently under suspension and which also prevents it from testing doping control samples for the authorities.
The decision made by WADA’s Executive Committee marks the second time the Rio laboratory has fallen below the required standards set by WADA following its nine month suspension in January 2012. The lab was later reinstated following a review that ensured proper corrective actions had been implemented.
An appeal may be made to the Court of Arbitration for Sport within 21 days and the laboratory may choose to reapply for accreditation and can seek “fast track” process from the Executive Committee.
