Today, Richard Whitehead completed his challenge of running 40 marathons in 40 days.
Whitehead started his conquest on August 13, and has since ran the breadth of Britain.
The 37-year-old set out to prove that any barrier can be overcome, and hopes that his gruelling test will inspire others to live a life without limits.
His challenge began in John O’Groats, and 977 miles later, finished at Land’s End this afternoon.
On completion of his feat, Whitehead posted on his website: “Today (23rd September) I completed my epic 40 marathons in 40 days challenge! It has been an absolutely epic journey, and something that will live with me forever.
“Despite the constant aches, pains and endless hills there was one thought that kept me going. That thought was a determination to prove that anyone and everyone can live a life without limits. Once you have accepted this, you can push the barriers as far as they can go.
“I hope I have been able to leave that message with the people across Britain. I would like to say a huge thank you to my team for supporting me through both the highs and the lows. Please remember to visit my Virgin Giving page and donate!”
Throughout the 40 days, Whitehead has been raising money for Scope and Sarcoma UK, with a vision of raising one million pounds.
A man called Terry Fox was the Paralympian’s inspiration for the challenge. Fox was an amputee, and suffered from sarcoma cancer, but before his premature passing at the age of 22, he attempted to run the breadth of Canada.
Unfortunately, Fox was unable to complete what he set out to do, but his idea inspired Whitehead to replicate his ambition in Britain.
