Sheffield-based Adam Hague continued his brilliant run of form by breaking the World Indoor Youth record in the pole vault at SportCity, Manchester.
SportCity has proved to be a happy hunting ground for the GB junior, as he recently cleared 5.41m to claim the British Junior indoor record competing there, and shoot to the top of the world rankings for the U18 category. He flew over the bar at 5.46m at the third attempt during a Sale Harriers open meeting and was met with rapturous applause by the appreciative crowd.
After setting the new record, Hague set his sights on claiming the outright British U20 record of 5.49m with his next jump but failed to clear the height. Hague has time on his side to achieve this feat though, as he will be an U20 athlete for the whole of the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
The talented 17 year old, who is studying an Athlete Development course at Barnsley College, has had an impressive career so far having finished eighth at the World Junior Championships in Eugene, USA, earlier in the summer and has a host of national and regional titles to his name. He also placed sixth at the World Youth Championships in 2013.
Also taking part at SportCity was Hague’s training partner and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Luke Cutts, who is the current holder of the British senior men’s pole vault record. Both men are coached by Trevor Fox at the Dearne ALC in Sheffield.
Hague is also part of the British Athletics Futures Programme and is hoping to be selected for the European Junior Championships in Eskilstuna, Sweden.
Another impressive performance at the open meeting was a 6.97s 60m sprint by Sale Harrier Jona Efoloko in his first run as a U17.
