A South African judge has ruled that the murder trial of Paralympian and Olympian Oscar Pistorius, will be partially televised, when it begins at the North Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, next Monday (3rd March).
After the sprinter’s girlfriend was found dead at Pistorius’ home in Pretoria, South Africa, last February 14th, he was accused of premeditated murder. The athlete claims that he shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp as he mistook her for an intruder. The model, aged 29 when she died, was shot through a bathroom door.
Exactly one year after the death of his girlfriend, Pistorius released a statement on his website (https://oscarpistorius.com/):
“No words can adequately capture my feelings about the devastating accident that has caused such heartache for everyone who truly loved – and continues to love Reeva,” it read.
“The pain and sadness – especially for Reeva’s parents, family and friends consumes me with sorrow.
“The loss of Reeva and the complete trauma of that day, I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”
Judge Dunstan Mlambo stated that the audio of the trial will be broadcasted, and other parts may also be televised live. The parts of the trial that will be televised include the opening and closing arguments, along with the evidence of experts. However the testimony of Pistorius will not be televised.
