Oscar Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide

In the case surrounding the shooting of Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year, Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of culpable homicide.

Judge Thokozile Masipa yesterday cleared the Paralympic athlete of premeditated murder due lack of facts from the state, but said he was “negligent” and that he did not act like a “reasonable person.”

The South African sprinter has also been found guilty of firing a gun in a busy restaurant, but cleared of illegal ammunition possession and discharging a firearm through a car sunroof.

Judge Masipa granted Pistorius bail, despite the state arguing he posed a flight risk, and summoned him back to court on October 13 for sentencing. The 27-year-old could face up to 15-years in prison, however, there is no minimum sentence for culpable homicide.

Arnold Pistorius, the athlete’s uncle, spoke: “There are no victors in this. We as a family remain deeply affected by the devastating tragedy event and it won’t bring Reeva back, but our hearts still go out for her family and friends.”

The International Paralympic Committee said their “thoughts remain with all those who have been affected by this terrible tragedy, in particular the family and friends of Reeva Steenkamp.”

Adding: “Throughout this case, the IPC has stressed the importance of differentiating between Oscar’s contribution to the Paralympic Movement and his private life.

“As a sports organisation, it would be unwise for the IPC to comment on the conclusion of a court case that is not related to sport.”

The outcome, so far, of this high-profile case has stirred up some angry reactions on Twitter:
