What a year it has been for Christine Ohuruogu. After winning 400m Gold at the Moscow World Championships and setting a new British record, Christine became the first British woman to win two world titles.
For her excellent feats this summer she has been awarded Sunday Times and Sky Sports ‘Sportswoman of the Year’ at an awards ceremony at Sky Studios in Isleworth on December 5th.
The Lloyd Cowan-coached athlete is back to training at Mile End and is now aiming for the Olympic Games in Rio 2016, having won a silver and gold at the last two Olympics – truly an exceptional record.
Ohuruogu told Sky News ‘I am shocked but I am really happy… It’s such a hard category, which is really great, it means we have women who are excelling and doing much better than people expect us to do.’
Last year’s winner of the award was Heptathlete Champ Jessica Ennis, after winning gold at the London Olympics. And the list of previous winners is an impressive one, boasting the likes of Sally Gunnell and Paula Radcliffe.
Ohuruogu faced some good competition for the award, as the top three women had all won world titles this year. In second place was 22 year old cyclist Becky James, the current world sprint and keirin champion, and placing third was triathlete Non Stanford, who became ITU World Triathlon Champion earlier this year.
For Christine, the road to Rio looks bright after her astonishing season this year. The 29 year old claimed that she planned to go to Rio and stated ‘I love what I do. Me and my coach have a great time training and 400m right now is a great event to be in and we have great talent coming through.’
In the other categories on the night, England netball won Team of the Year after a successful 2013 and Amy Marren won Disability Sports Person of the Year after achieving six medals at the IPC World Swimming Championships in August.
