2012 Olympian Ross Murray has announced his retirement from athletics on social media.
The 27-year-old from North Shields has cited injury and illness over the last couple of years as his reason – in particular outlining his struggle with Haglund’s deformity – which causes a bone enlargement on the back of the heel.
Recounting his journey on instagram, he wrote: “since my first race, I’ve had the most unreal time in athletics. From going to Young Athletes Leagues, the English Schools, competing for GB as a junior, going to the Olympics and travelling the world as a senior athlete.”
Ross competed in the 1500 metres at London 2012, running 3:36.74 to finish fourth in his heat and qualify for the semi-finals. The Gateshead runner said he feels “blessed and privileged that I was able to compete in the Olympics…and a home games as well!”
That year, he lowered his personal best to 3:34.76, five years after becoming English Schools champion in 2007.
Team mates were quick to pay tribute. World and European medallist Jenny Meadows said: “one thing for sure… you certainly did it YOUR way & broke the mould! Congrats on a great career Ross.”
Welsh international Tom Marshall added “This guy in 2012 made me really want to focus on the 1500. It’s thanks to him I’ve stuck at this distance. Phenomenal athlete and an even better guy!” Andy Vernon’s response was a little more light-hearted.
