Gold Coast 2018 bronze medallist Mark Dry leads the Scotland selection for the Loughborough International athletics event this Sunday.
The hammer thrower, awaiting confirmation of hip surgery, will throw for Scotland and Sunday and then for GB and NI at the Halle Imnternational event in Germany the following weekend.
‘Why am I still doing Loughborough? Not in a negative way, because I believe in the surgery, but for whatever reason if something went wrong then this is my last chance to represent Scotland,’ said Mark, who followed up his Glasgow 2014 bronze with a last round throw to replicate that feat in Australia last month.
‘Similarly, the following week in Germany, I have another chance to throw for GB and NI and again that could conceivably be my last GB vest. It’s hard to pass up these honours.
‘Also, if for any reason that the surgery is delayed, then I need to try and get some qualifying distances for the European Champs in Berlin – even though my preference is to get things done earlier so I can rehab fully next winter.’
Dry and high jumper Allan Smith will compete at the 60th edition of the Loughborough International in the Paula Radcliffe Stadium and are joined in the Scotland team by a string of GB and NI senior and age group internationals such as like Grant Plenderleith, Mhairi Hendry (below), Rachel Hunter, Kelsey Stewart, Jemma Reekie, Jack Lawrie, Sol Sweeney, Emma Canning and Andrew Murphy.
Scotland annually compete in this six-team will take on the hosts Loughborough Uni, England, Wales, GB and NI Juniors, and British Universities.
With Scots available for selection for four of those teams – Scotland, GB and NI Juniors, Loughborough Uni and British Unis – there will be a strong presence on Sunday.
Scotland will wear Joma Sport kit for the first time at the weekend, following the announcement last week of a two-year agreement between the Spanish sportswear firm and governing body scottishathletics.
