European Athletics have recently chosen the Portuguese city of Leira as the host of the 2020, 2021 and 2022 editions of the European Throwing Cup.

First held back in 2001, the Cup is an important event in the European throwing calendar. We were honoured to broadcast the event this time last year in Leira and agree with the president of Juventude Vidigalense Pablo Vieira, the athletics club in Leira, in saying that the town provides excellence facilities and weather conditions for athletes.

Just last year, the event saw 2017 World Champion Johannes Vetter smash the championship record with his throw of 92.70m in the javelin, demonstrating the calibre of athlete the Cup attracts. To give you a taste of what the event offers, you can still check out our on-demand footage from 2018 here.

Speaking to European Athletics, Vieira adds “As we have done in 2014, 2015 and 2018, we shall offer all the teams the best conditions possible so that the athletes will be able to excel as we, once more, also expect to excel”.

The 2019 European Throwing Cup will be held this weekend, Saturday 9th March and Sunday 10th March, in Samorin, Slovakia.
