Kevin Mayer has broken the world record for decathlon with a performance of 9126 in Talence, France.

The Frenchman’s mark bettered Ashton Eaton’s previous record, set at the 2015 IAAF World Championships, by 81 points.

Mayer’s performance comes after a disappointing European Championships in Berlin this August, where he failed to record a mark in the second event – the long jump – and subsequently pulled out of the championships.
His marks in Talence were:
100m – 10.55 (0.3 m/s)
Long jump – 7.80m
Shot put – 16.00m
High jump – 2.05m
400m – 48.42
110m hurdles – 13.75 (-1.1 m/s)
Discus throw – 50.54m
Pole vault – 5.45m
Javelin – 71.90m
1500m – 4:36.11
Decathlon – 9126
Mayer’s performance came on a day that also saw a new world record in the men’s marathon.
