2011 IAAF World Championship 100m bronze medalist Kelly-Ann Baptiste has tested positive for a banned substance and has left the 2013 championships in Moscow.
Trinidad and Tobago team manager Dexter Voisin told the press today “She has voluntarily withdrawn from the competition and is heading back to her base. “
Initially Voisin had refused to confirm that Baptiste had tested positive however this was later confirmed by a reliable source.
National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) president Ephraim Serrette said his organisation will issue a press release within 48 hours.
Baptiste was the first female sprinter from Trinidad & Tobago to win a medal in a global meeting with her bronze medal at the 3rd IAAF World Youth Championships in 2003 with 11.58.
In 2004 she won silver in both the 100m and 4x100m at the CAC Junior Championships and attended her first Olympic Games, running the lead-off leg in the Trinidad & Tobago 4x100m team. In her first individual appearence at the Olympics, she failed to qualify for the 100m semi-finals in Beijing.
In 2010 Baptiste began training with the 2007 triple world champion Tyson Gay in Florida under coach Lance Brauman and in June of that year she ran 10.84 making her the 27th fastest woman over the 100m of all time. She followed up a strong 2010 with a bronze medal at the 13th IAAF World Championships in Deagu with a time of 10.98 (-1.4 m/s).
She was in fine form in 2013, setting a personal best of 10.83 in Port-of Spain, Trinidad on 22nd June 2013.
