17-year-old world record holder Kare Adenegan saw off competition from a talented swimmer and jockey to win BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2018. The teenager from Coventry set a new T34 100m world record of 16.80s at the Anniversary Games in London in the summer. The Paralympic silver medalist is the only person to have beaten Hannah Cockroft in a wheelchair race in their T34 category. Eilish McColgan won on her Great South Run debut as veteran Chris Thompson continued his good recent form with a record third-straight win. The world of track and field has been marking 50 years since Dick Fosbury’s revolutionary high jump at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico. The “back-layout” style known as the “Fosbury Flop” marked a big change from earlier straight-on or scissors techniques. This feature on the IAAF website describes the moments as “tearing up the existing coaching manuals”. A statue of the former Oregon State University student has also been unveiled at his alma mater.

European champion Martyn Rooney has added his thoughts following the news that rape and death threats have been directed towards England footballer Karen Carney on social media. Rooney, who went to college with Carney, says “social media gives so many people the opportunity to abuse you for no reason”, underlining that no-one should have to face abuse regardless of their status as a professional athlete. The 31-year-old spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live (10 minutes in).

The official mascot of the 2019 European Indoor Championships in Glasgow has been announced. Scottee the Scottie Dog will hope to join such legends as Berlino the Bear and Hero the Hedgehog when the competition takes place between the 1st and 3rd March next spring. Poster girl and 2018 IAAF Diamond League champion Laura Muir was naturally there at the unveiling put on by organisers at a local primary school.

The sport’s governing body is in the process of announcing nominees for it’s IAAF Athletics Awards 2018, which will take place in Monaco on Tuesday 4th December. This morning 10 choices for Female Athlete of the Year have been released including Dina Asher-Smith, who won three gold medals at the European Championships in Berlin and Caterine Ibarguen, who won the IAAF Diamond League trophy in both the long jump and the triple jump.
