Mo Farah and Christine Ohuruogu have been announced as two of the headline names for this summer’s IAAF Diamond League meet at Hampden Park.
The two day competition, held between July 11-12, will attract athletics fans and competitors from around the world just 16 days before Commonwealth Games action begins in the same stadium.
Farah, who has previously said he is unsure of his schedule post London marathon, will make his first track appearance in Glasgow since his double in the Moscow world championships last year.
The Alberto Salazar-coached athlete spoke: “Glasgow will be one of my first track appearances in front of a home crowd in 2014, and having produced my best in front of the British public in London, I’m really looking forward to getting back out there and taking in the home support.
“Nothing in the world can compare to a British crowd and I will be doing everything I can to get the Hampden crowd going.”
Ohuruogu, who is taking a more relaxed approach to the 2014 season, will be making her first appearance in the Scottish city since 2006.
“It is a real privilege to be competing at the first ever athletics event at Hampden. To have potentially 30,000 there in July, it’s going to be an amazing atmosphere for both athletes and spectators,” Ohuruogu spoke.
British Athletics’ chief executive, Niels De Vos, said he was “delighted” that Farah and Ohuruogu would be competing in the meet.
“They will be joined by all of the top box office attractions from the world of athletics. Athletes love competing in the UK knowing that they will get incredible support and a fantastic atmosphere in Glasgow,” De Vos added.
Hampden Park has replaced the London leg of the Diamond League for the 2014 series adding to what is expected to be a spectacular sporting year for Scotland.
“We always knew 2014 would be a special year,” Nigel Holl, chief executive of Scottish Athletics, commented.
“Adding the Diamond League into the mix – as a one off – makes the summer special indeed.
“It means that this summer we will not only see the best Commonwealth athletes in Glasgow but also now those athletes from non-Commonwealth countries can come and experience the Hampden Roar, the Glasgow hospitality and the passion of the Scottish crowd.”‚Ä®
Fans have until March 19 to register for tickets. All tickets should be purchased through the British Athletics website.
