Ennis-Hill set to miss indoors with Achilles injury

| |

Olympic and World champion Jessica Ennis-Hill has been forced to pull out of the indoor season with an injury to her Achilles similar to the one that forced the 30-year old to miss the Moscow World Championships in 2013.

Ennis-Hill was due to compete in Glasgow later this month and had hoped to add further indoor competitions to her calendar as part of her preparations for the Rio Olympics. However, Ennis-Hill does not believe the injury will affect her participation in the games at risk, and will be targeting the Gotzis Hypo meeting, where she made her comeback last year, as her first major competition of the year.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the heptathlete said: “As an athlete it’s so frustrating to get injuries at any time of the year, but we are still in February so maybe a little bit of rest is not a bad thing and if we can get this sorted hopefully that will stand me in good stead.

“There’s a lot of time before the Olympics. I’ll be going away and sitting with the medical team to go through everything. Hopefully it won’t impact on my summer.”

Ennis-Hill has been dogged by Achilles problems in the past and also sat out the whole of the 2014 season following the birth of her son Reggie. In 2015, she successfully returned to action winning the Beijing World Championships and will head to Rio as the favourite for gold again.
