Ellington and Levine involved in career threatening accident

| |

British sprinters James Ellington and Nigel Levine are in hospital in Spain after a motorbike accident.

The Guardian has reported that Ellington has ‘career-ending injuries’. British Athletics has confirmed that the duo were warm-weather training in Tenerife and the incident occurred on Tuesday 17 January.

“Regretfully we can confirm that James Ellington and Nigel Levine have sustained injuries following a road accident in Tenerife on Tuesday evening. Both athletes are receiving medical treatment and are conscious and stable. British Athletics medical staff are with the athletes and liaising with hospital staff over their treatment” said a statement from the governing body.

“We are in communication with their family members in the UK and will be keeping them informed of the situation. We will not be releasing further information on the severity of their injuries at the present time.”

Ellington, 31, has undergone surgery to repair broken bones in his tibia and fibula and the Guardian have also reported that he is believed to have fractured his pelvis. It is thought that 27-year-old Levine, who was also taken to hospital, has suffered less serious injuries.
