Former 400m World Champion Amantle Montsho faces two years on the sidelines following a drugs ban.
The Botswana athlete was initially banned in August last year after failing a drugs test following the commonwealth games in Glasgow, where she was one hundredth of a second away from a medal.
Montsho tested positive for a substance known as Methylhexaneamine, a nasal decongestant prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) due to its fat-burning properties. Both Montsho’s A and B samples tested positive for the substance.
The case was bounced around between Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), then the IAAF and finally the Botswana Athletics Association, who decided on a punishment of two years, which was announced by association president Moses Bantsi.
The 31-year-old became Botswana’s first ever Commonwealth gold medallist when she took the title in Delhi, before becoming world champion a year later. She failed to defend her title after a thrilling 400m final, losing to Christine Ohuruogu by four-thousandths of a second.
Montsho can still appeal the ban, however she has stated in the past a desire to quit athletics to take up Basketball after the Rio Olympics.
