Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), Dr Leon Creaney has been selected to be part of the field of play recovery team for the Athletics at London 2012.
Dr Creaney who has long been part of the UKA medical team said: “I will be stationed next to the track inside the Olympic stadium for the whole of the athletics programme, which is on for nine days. We could be involved in anything, any sort of injury that happens then and there on the track. The most common thing would be a major torn hamstring, or an athlete missing the mat in the high jump or pole vault and landing on the ground.”
A number of training events will take place in the lead up to London 2012 and will have to participate in a full practice scenario every day of the games to ensure that the medical team at ready to take action in the unfortunate event of an injury.
“We’re fully trained in dealing with the emergencies that can arise. They can be heart problems, respiratory problems or traumatic injuries. People can fall over and break their legs; that’s happened before in indoor events.”
Dr Creaney runs a sports medicine clinic at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham as well as Mancester and London for everyone from joggers to elite athletes.
