Usain Bolt has renewed his sponsorship deal with Puma until after the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio
The Jamaican has been with Puma since 2003, and has been a vital connection for the German kit-maker to rival Nike and Adidas.
Puma’s chieft executive, Bjoern Gulden, spoke of the deal: “He will play a crucial role in our future product concepts, as well as brand communications leading towards the Olympic Games in Rio 2016 and beyond.”
Bolt had indicated he would retire after Rio, but in an hour long interview on BBC 5 live recently, the 27-year-old hinted he might wait until after the 2017 World Championships in London.
In a statement released by Puma, the Jamaican said: “They recognised my talent at an early age and have supported me throughout, especially in the early years when I had some difficult times due to injuries.”
Adding: “I have always been very happy to be a part of the Puma family, I am proud to represent them and delighted to continue with them for the years ahead.”
According to a statement on Reuters, Bolt, the highest earner in track & field, will be paid $10 million for each of his remaining three seasons.
If he chose to continue competing through to 2017, the same amount would apply.
Bolt’s connection with Puma would reportedly remain once he has retired, too. The multiple champion would take the role of Puma ambassador, earning him a salary of $4 million.
As well as their sponsorship with Bolt himself, Puma have also had a longstanding commitment to Jamaican track & field.
