Big summer ahead for European champion Gemili

| |

Whilst the title of European champion is something nearly every athlete dreams of, Adam Gemili, the 21-year-old from London has his feet placed firmly on the ground.

Gemili is in his third year at the University of East London studying Sport and Exercise Science. What makes Adam different from most top-level athletes, however, is the fact that not only is he undertaking a degree but he is using his dissertation to explore a topic relevant to his discipline.

Balancing his athletics with his studies, the Blackheath and Bromley athlete hopes for a high 2:1 in his degree – “But if I smash up my dissertation potentially I can take it up to a first,” he said speaking to the Guardian.

“I’m in very good shape,” Gemili said. “Last year I had a couple of minor injuries but I’ve had nothing this year.”

Gemili hopes to open 2015 with a personal best time in the 100m followed by a few races in the 200m leading up to the UK trials before his attention turns to the world championships later on this year in Beijing.

The double European champion says titles come before records – “it’s about going into the championships, competing well and getting medals”.

Hopefully Adam can continue his success on the international stage following on from his sublime summer last year, where he took silver in the 100m at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and double gold at the European Championships in Zürich.

You can watch Adam at the UK trials in Birmingham from the 3-5th of July.
