This summer’s Anniversary Games are to be held on the streets of London, according to The Guardian.
The Games, first held last year to mark a year since the 2012 Games in London, were due to take place at the Olympic Stadium, but redevelopment at the 90,000 seater stadium has lead to the games, due to take place on 20 July, switching venue.
It is another setback for the games, due to take part on the anniversary of the start of 2012’s incredible events, which went down as probably the greatest Olympics of all time. However, due to this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, it is to be held a full week later.
The Games will see athletic events, long jump, pole vault and shot put grace London streets, in front of an expectant 20,000 crowd.
Greg Rutherford will be one of the athletes on show, and the long jumper, who last month recorded a new British record of 8.51m, spoke at the launch.
“It’s a great place to be and I think it’s going to be incredibly special to hold the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games here.”
He also promised fans: “By the time I come to compete I will be in the best shape of the year and I’ll be looking to jump far here.”
Last summer’s event saw a host of world champions return to the stadium, including Usain Bolt.
The games will be held in central London, with events planned for The Mall and The Horse Guards Parade.
