2Hot2Not – World Relays

| |

Last week, the athletics world took a trip to Nassau, Bahamas in search of golden sands, sun and relay madness. The inaugural IAAF World Relays hosted five different relays and at Vincosport we’ve taken a look at some of the best and worst bits!

HOT!

GB Women’s 4x200m relay team– a time of 1:29.61s secured a national record and a silver medal for the quartet of Desiree Henry, Anyika Onuora, Bianca Williams and Asha Philip. The silver medal was Team GB’s first ever at the event, with Philip producing a storming last leg to fight off World and Olympic Champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

HOT!

GB Men’s 4x100m relay teamafter (five!) years of disappointment where our men’s relay quartet have failed to produce the goods, the team of Richard Kilty, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, James Ellington and Dwain Chambers brought the baton home safely in 38.19s to win the bronze medal behind Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago. We hope this is a sign of good things to come at this summer’s European Championships.

NOT!

Yohan Blake…and his fingernails!- despite anchoring Jamaica to two gold medals and a world record in the space of a weekend, the majority of the attention has gone towards “The Beast’s” manicuring, or lack of it. Perhaps it’s time Blake looked into getting a ‘Stylfile’ as seen on TV’s ‘The Apprentice’. Warning: Scratching may occur.

NOT!

USA’s Katie Mackey – Women’s 4x1500m Crash- we knew that the World Relays would bring us carnage but didn’t expect it to come in the women’s 15 lap race. Australian Zoe Buckman was floored at the first changeover after passing the baton to her teammate when American Katie Mackey hammered into the back of her knocking them both to the ground. Mackey got back up to complete her leg, helping her USA team finish second with Australia coming third.
