2014 indoor season is a sell out for British Athletics

British Athletics revealed yesterday (January 23) that their 2014 indoor calendar has been a sell out.

The three meets: Glasgow; Sheffield and Birmingham, will be greeted by a record number of athletics fans along with an array of world-class athletes.

This weekend’s Glasgow International Match will kick-start what is expected to be a stellar trio of meets.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland will take on USA, Scotland and a Commonwealth Select team, which, between them, boasts 44 global medallists.

Big names such as: Holly Bleasdale; Elidh Child; Tiffany Porter; Bernard Lagat; Kim Collins and Bershawn Jackson are amongst the line-up, and will compete at the Emirates Arena this Saturday (January 25).

Two weeks later and the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield will host the Sainsbury’s British Indoor Championships on February 8 and 9.

The two day competition will bring together some of the countries finest athletes as it boasts the highest level of indoor domestic competition in the country.

The Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix, which will be held at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, will round off British Athletics’ indoor season on February 15.

Birmingham’s renowned event remains the biggest annual indoor meet in the world, and will no doubt attract a bundle of high calibre athletes.

British Athletics Chief Executive, Niels de Vos, spoke of the organisations indoor success: “We are delighted that once again our indoor events have attracted capacity crowds, showing that the appetite for athletics in this country is very much alive – British Athletics continues to have a worldwide reputation for staging great events which inspire the public.

“The Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match has over 40 global medallists competing in a unique team competition and it’s testament to the quality of the events that Olympic, World and European medallists look to return to Britain year after year, using our meets as crucial components of their preparations for major championships.

“British Athletics, with the support of Sainsbury’s, continue to innovate with the integration of Paralympic Stars alongside their Olympic counterparts – an area in which we lead the world. The fact that we are already sold out at all three events in Glasgow, Sheffield and Birmingham is fantastic news.”

This weekend’s Glasgow International Match will be available to watch live on BBC One and via the BBC website on Saturday from 1.45pm, and Michelle Sammet will be at the Emirates Arena interviewing the athletes after their events for Vinco Sport.
