British Athletics have confirmed that Hampden Park will host what was the London leg of the IAAF Diamond League on July 11 and 12.
Home to Queen’s Park F.C and the Scottish national team, Glasgow’s Hampden Park will host the prestigious meet as a warm-up event for Glasgow 2014, attracting track and field’s elite to the city two weeks before the Commonwealth Games.
Hampden Park is an impressive venue, with a rich history. When it opened in 1903 it was the biggest stadium in the world, with a maximum capacity in excess of 100,000. The stadium’s record attendance is noted at an astonishing 149,000 for a match between Scotland and England in the late 1930’s.
The stadium is now undergoing major refurbishment work for the Commonwealth Games, which will begin with the opening ceremony at Celtic Park on July 23. Hampden will host the track and field athletics competitions and then the closing ceremony on August 3.
Tara Hewitt, head of sponsorship at Sainsbury’s, said: “As part of our new long-term relationship with British Athletics we’re delighted that the 2014 IAAF Diamond League is coming to Glasgow and will be known as the Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix.”
Twitter users expressed their excitement on the site:
