As of today, Monday 10 November 2017, there are just 1,000 days to go until the first event of the IAAF World Athletics Championships that will take place in London’s Olympic Stadium.
For the first time, both IAAF and IPC World Athletics Championships will take place at the same city in the same year in 2017.
When London was awarded the championships in 2011 Simon Morton, Director of Events at UK Sport said:
“This is a superb result for London and the coalition that has come together to deliver the bid. London 2017 was the number one event for us to bring to the UK post 2012 and we’ve achieved that.
“We have promised to deliver the greatest ever World Championships on behalf of our partners, the IAAF so the hard work must now begin.”
Talking of the championships to london2017athletics.com, European 100m champion James Dasaolu said:
“I can’t wait for the 2017 World Champs. London 2012 was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete in a home Olympics, so to be given another chance on home soil at a major championships is going to be incredible.”
Libby Clegg, silver medallist in the IPC World Championships 100m and 200m, added:
“I have had the pleasure of competing at both London 2012 & Glasgow 2014 (for the Commonwealth Games), so I know how special a home Games is.
“As an athlete, you have to take each year as it comes as I have the World Championships in Doha in 2015 and the Paralympics in Rio 2016.
“However, when London 2017 comes around, it is going to be a very special event for all home athletes involved.”
