It was one of the most emotional endings to a European Athletics Championship, as Germany stormed to the women’s 4x100m relay gold medal.
The gold medal ensured they finished top of the medal table, and it was a fitting end that this was secured in the last race of the event in front of a capacity crowd.
Alexandra Burghardt, Lisa Mayer, Gina Luckenkemper (who had already won gold in the women’s 100m) and Rebekka Haase won in a time of 42.34.
Poland’s quarter won silver with a national record 42.61 with Italy third in a time of 42.84.
The drama unfolded at the first change, with two teams falling out of the race at this time – leaving Germany to take home the gold.
