Four-time European javelin champion Steve Backley is one of the greatest throwers to compete at European Athletics events.
The British powerhouse had a storied career, including Olympic medals, European and Commonwealth Games victories.
Also, his rivalry with Czech thrower Jan Zelezny, over which athlete held the javelin world record, took the athletics world by storm in the early 1990s.
At Munich 2002, Backley and Zelezny faced off again, with the Backley defending his crown and winning his fourth consecutive European title.
